Secret Server Tips and Tricks

Take full advantage of the password generator. The typical strong password is alphanumeric and 10 characters with no dictionary words. Let the password generator create a password that is sure to be strong and hacker-resistant.

Don't take a chance with having any passwords stored in plain text. Use the 'Import' feature to bring in any passwords you have stored in Microsoft Excel or any other CSV file.

Keep your Secret Server organized by deactivating secrets and Secret Types that are no longer used. To do this, enter the 'Edit Secret' or 'Edit Secret Type' page and uncheck the Active box. Remember, secrets and Secret Types cannot be deleted due to auditing reasons.

Keep an eye on all of your secrets by having Secret Server send you an email every time a secret you have access to, has been edited. You can find this option in your Preferences section.

By clicking on the 'Change' button on the Secret Type Designer edit page, administrators can create naming patterns for secrets using Regular Expressions. Complete instructions are provided.

Make use of the notes field when creating or editing a secret. For secrets such as product license keys, it may be highly useful to write a message indicating certain limitations on the licenses (i.e. For work purposes only).

Are you worried about people spying over your shoulder to see your passwords? Go to the Preferences section and choose to have all passwords. You can still use Copy/Paste to use the password in applications.

Be sure to remember your login password. Secret Server stresses security and administrators are able to set a limit on the amount of times you can attempt to login. This prevents hackers from attempting dictionary and bruteforce attacks. With Secret Server, you only have to remember ONE password to get ALL the others - so don't forget it! :)

Do you have a secret but aren't quite sure what Secret Type it falls under? Keep your secrets organized and easily identifiable by using the Secret Type Gallery. The Secret Type Gallery is a collection of Secret Types that other Secret Server users have contributed.
You can also contribute to the Secret Type gallery if you have come up with a brilliant Secret Type that you think others will want to use.
